FRANCIS MENSAH Ahiaku, a 28-year-old cabbie, is in critical condition at a hospital after a businessman allegedly struck him on the side of his head with a hammer at Tema. The suspect, Eric Nartey, a 32-year-old resident of Ashaiman Golf City, was said to have used the hammer on the driver of an Opel Astra taxi with registration number GT 6620 Y, after causing damage to his vehicle. Francis had asked Eric to go with him to a police station. Francis was reportedly rushed to the Tema General Hospital and was later transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. He was said to be in coma at the time of filling this report. Superintendent Gabriel Dokyi, Tema District Police Commander, told Daily Guide that Eric Nartey, who was in charge of Toyota Hilux with registration number GR 2567 W, allegedly caused damaged to the driverís mirror of Francisís vehicle at about 9:30 am at Community One, site 20 in Tema. He added that Francis, who was critically injured, asked Eric to board his taxi for them to report the matter at the police station. The District Police Commander said that a heated argument ensued between the cabbie and Eric, after Eric refused to pull his colleague from the Toyota car, adding that Eric allegedly came out from his car with a hammer which he supposedly used in hammering the victimís head. He stated that Francis lost consciousness and was rushed to the abovementioned hospital by some drivers around who wanted to set Ericís vehicle ablaze but the timely intervention by the police prevented any unlawful act. Eric was also arrested by some residents and taken to the Tema Community One District Police Station where he has been detained and the vehicle impounded for further investigations.
