MELCOM Disaster: Building Might Not Have Permit

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is not sure if the collapsed multi-storey building that resulted in the death of four and left many injured had a building permit. A source at the AMA told The Finder that the assembly is yet to meet the owner of the building, whose name was given as Nana Kwesi Boadu. The source, however, insisted that it is important that developers in the city of Accra obtain permit before they start any construction. According to the source, obtaining a building permit always enables the assembly to constantly monitor the building of structures so that defects can be realized before they become fatal. The incident occurred at about 9:30am when staff of the company was having its usual morning devotion. As at press time, four people were reported dead, with 52 rescued. Some of the injured were conveyed to various health facilities in the region. The storey building was rented by the management of Melcom Group of Companies and inaugurated in January this year.
