Accept Election Results EU Advises

The European Unions (EU) Mission in Ghana has told Citi News it expects a close contest in this years December general elections but expects Ghanaians and the main political actors to accept the results after December 7. The EU has been supporting Ghanas election activities and is currently supporting this years elections with about $10 million. Although the EU has indicated it will not send down a fully fledged Observer Mission, it will send specialists to support the process. In an exclusive interview with Citi News,, the Head of EU Mission in Ghana, Ambassador Claude Mataern stated that Ghanaians should accept the election results to avoid any disturbances. "It will be the responsibility of Ghanaians to respect the decision of the vote. It is clear that it will be a close election race. Probably what is important is that Ghanaians are united with the decisions taken by the voters. They have to remain united and accept the decision. They also have to respect the loser of the election. It is a democracy which is in place in Ghana already so we are continuing it. On the issue of the exclusion of the media from participating in the special voting exercise, the EU Chairman said: I will be in contact with the chair of the electoral commission to have some explanation on how it can be managed. That will be a really positive move so that at the end people will be confident and have a trust on the result. The Electoral Commission, according to its Acting Public Relations Officer, Christian Owusu Parry insists that, Its a matter of law so it is difficult for the Commission to say that we are making some kind of arrangement contrary to what the law says. The law has restricted special voting to two groups of people. This is a law that has been put together and approved by Parliament.
