Election Watchers Take Issue With Level Of Reported Registration Of Minors For Election 2012

With less than two weeks to the elections, a major problem that needs urgent solution is the registration of minors in the biometric register. Panelists on GTV's Current Affairs Programme Talking Point have therefore called for concerted efforts to address the issue before it generates into violence on Election Day. The Executive Director of the West African Network for Peace Building, Emmanuel Bombande, called for proactive measures to find out the extent of the problem on region by region basis in order to find a workable solution to it. The Public Relations Officer of the Electoral Commission, Christian Owusu-Parry, explained that the problem could be attributed to lack of evidence on the part of the registration officers. He said the officers needed some prove to file a challenge form. John Larvie of CODEO was of the view that even though the faces in the register depicts that they are minors, one cannot stop them from voting on Election Day. He said some people define their age by their responsibilities and therefore there is a critical need to prove that they are indeed below the required age.
