Baby Thief Gets 34 Months

Doris Eshun, the 25-year-old unemployed woman who entered the room of a 34-year-old woman at Abeka Lapaz while the latter was drying clothes to steal her six-month-old son and other personal belongings, would spend the next 34 months in jail for the offence. This was after she admitted to the Circuit Court that she stole the baby of the complainant, her dresses and mobile phone before attempting to board a vehicle to Kaneshie, where was nabbed. The accused person did not show any signs of remorse when her sentence was read and later burst into laughter when another case was called. The accused person, last week, pleaded guilty to stealing and child stealing in a court presided over by Sedina Agbemava who handed down the sentence to Doris based on her own plea. ASP Sarah Ekua Acquah, the prosecuting officer who presented the facts of the case, told the court that the complainant is a 34-year-old business woman who resides at Abeka Lapaz whilst the accused person is unemployed and lives at Dome, a suburb of Achimota. According to her, on November 11, 2012, the complainant was removing clothes from a drying line outside her apartment leaving her six-month-baby in her room. The police officer noted that the accused person took advantage of that and entered the room of the complainant unnoticed and stole her clothes worth GH110, a mobile phone worth GH100 and afterwards stole the baby. She said Doris used a veil to cover herself and quickly left the house for a lorry station to board a vehicle bound for Kaneshie, adding that the mother of the baby returned and upon realising her baby had been stolen, she raised the alarm. The DSP explained that her shouts drew the attention of a certain Gladys Manu, who joined her to search for the baby. They were told by a witness that the accused person was seen carrying a baby and heading towards the Kaneshie lorry station. Ms Acquah said the complainant and her friend rushed to the lorry station to see the accused person with the baby in her arms about to take off to Kaneshie. In addition, she stated that the nursing mother took her baby from the accused person and told the drivers mate to help her arrest Doris to the nearest police station. The prosecutor noted that the baby thief was taken to the police station and the complainant led police to her room to show where Doris stole the items and her baby. The DSP said Doris was arraigned after police concluded investigations.
