Water Crisis Is Caused By Lack Of Attention To Water Sector By Successive Governments-CPP

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) said the reasons for the current water shortage in the country include inefficient, ineffective, inadequate and dilapidated infrastructure. A statement to the Ghana News Agency signed by CPP Spokesperson on Works, Housing and Water Resources Mr J. T. Abebrese, says the problem is also caused by the lack of attention to the water sector by successive governments. The CPP said inadequate funding and ineffective and destructive practices employed by an imported foreign management company also accounted for the problem. It said in order to ensure regular flow of water for consumption and other uses,Government should treat the sector as one in distress and make an immediate allocation of emergency funds to Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) from the Consolidated Fund, to help arrest the fast deterioration in service delivery in the short-run. It stated that Government must make plans to provide GWCL with funds to enable it to embark on an immediate repair and re-tooling programme. Equipment of the GWCL needs to be regularly maintained and replaced at appropriate times, it said. The statement also said strict disciplinary measures should be put in place so that any worker of GWCL who compromises the system is seriously dealt with and made to account for its inefficient financial management of the Company. The CPP and Ghanaians expect the political leadership of this country to adopt a new approach to managing the country which will compel the leadership to treat their ministries as if they were their personal corporate entities. The CPP advises that the ministry responsible for water resources should look beyond the current challenge in planning for a sustainable solution the statement said.
