The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has indicated that they will actively participate in the debate over the 2013 budget when it is presented to Parliament.
Former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei said on Citi FM Wednesday that the NPP has an obligation to hold the governing National Democratic Congress accountable.
�Serious constitutional breaches have occurred and we have an obligation to hold the government accountable,� he declared.
This move is a break from the Minority Caucus�s boycott of all business relating to the presidency, which they are carrying out in support of a petition that party leaders have brought to the Supreme Court challenging John Mahama�s declaration as president.
While presenting their version of the State of the Nation Address on Wednesday, NPP legislators accused government of increasing Ghana�s debt from GH� 9.5 billion to GH� 33.5 billion.
They therefore called on government to explain to Ghanaians how they used that money, because according to the NPP, borrowed funds ought to go towards developmental projects, not the payment of judgment debts.
Dr. Akoto Osei further insisted that government explain to Ghanaians why �they breached the Appropriation Act�because they have violated the law and the Minister would have to come and explain why they violated the law and we have to think about what sanctions to impose.�
