We Welcome Salary Increases - UTAG

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has given indications of its satisfaction with the decision by the government to increase the salaries of University lecturers. Minister of Information and Media Relations, Mahama Ayariga, announced the increase in Parliament while contributing to a debate on the Presidents State of the Nation address. According to him, Senior Lecturers will be paid close to five thousand cedis while junior lecturers would receive close to 400 Ghana cedis. The President for UTAG, Laud Kpakpo Addo, in an interview with Citi News said the increment was a step in the right direction. As an association, the increment in the pay of lecturers for them to be more productive is welcome news and if that is the case, it goes to buttress the fact that there is always a need for salaries of lecturers to be increased, he stated. Mr. Addo further emphasized: We dont know when it will be implemented but we know a certain bureaucracy must be met however we hope that sooner than later it will hit their accounts then we see what will happen with their productivity. Laud Kpakpo Addo called on government to renovate the dilapidating structures in many of the public universities. Infrastructure on some of our campuses are woefully inadequate and nothing to write home about so whiles we are looking at increasing salaries of lecturers, they should also give attention to the structures. On most campuses, the GETfund projects have all been put on hold and nothing is going on. We need these things addressed, he added.
