NPP Communicator: PURC Is A Useless Body and Must Be Scrapped

Public Utility Regulatory Commission has been described as a useless body by a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, Opoku Davies, stating that the Regulatory commission must be scrapped with immediate effect because it does not fight for the interest of consumers. He enlightened that for a very long time; Ghanaians have been enduring the inefficiency of the PURC to address issues concerning tariffs increment in favor of the consumers, but rather has been endorsing any proposal raised by VRA, GWCL and ECG to increase tariffs. Speaking on Okay FMs Ghana Decides program as a panelist, Opoku Davies said that; it is a useless body, it is a toothless body; it should be scrapped with immediate effect and all it cares about is the interest of the ECG. According to the communication member of the NPP, Ghanaians are not prepared to pay the debt incurred by the multinational companies and the government institutions; urging Ghanaians, the NDC government and the Parliament to resist any attempt to increase tariffs. He surmised that Volta River Authority and Electricity Company of Ghana for the last tariffs increment assuring Ghanaians that they would provide effective and quality service to the nation but failed on that promise; adding that the situation has gone worst upon paying that tariffs when compared to the current power outage in the country. He therefore said that the Regulatory body which is supposed to ensure fairness has taken sides with the VRA and ECG; stressing that Ghanaians should rise up and kick against any measure to increase the tariffs since PURC is not helping the country to address the realistic price the VRA boss is propagating. Opoku Davies chanted that; Ghanaians will not sit down again for another increment; we dare them to increase it and the good people of this country will rise up and resist any attempt to increase utility prices. He again advised that it is time to privatize most of the public institutions like ECG, GWCL and VRA; in that the best way to ensure effective delivery of service is to go into Private Public Partnership which according to him will enforce the companies and the government departments to pay up their debts. He chided that; we are sleeping as a nation and the kind of attitude we put up in government institutions is appalling; adding that electricity is a serious matter which affect all aspect of lives and that Ghanaians are not ready to pay for additional increment when the value of it is not manifested. He entreated the Electricity Company of Ghana to be bold enough to chase after the multinational companies, the Public Universities and the government agencies which owe it (ECG) huge sums of monies.
