The African Institute for Mathematical Science, (AIMS-Ghana) over the weekend opened its new campus at Biriwa near Saltpond in the Central Region. The new campus provides a 24-hour learning environment, with students benefiting from constant access to lecturers, tutors and academic infrastructure such as computing laboratory, libraries and feedback. The AIMS-Ghana programme offers a one year intensive Master�s Degree course for African graduates across the continent in Mathematical Science. Professor Francis Allotey, Founding and Acting Director, AIMS-Ghana, speaking at the opening ceremony, said the course also provided a broad cutting edge science and strong Mathematical skills, as well as computing research skills to the graduates. He said Canadian Universities and Technology Company, Research in Motion, manufacturers of BlackBerry mobile telephony, has provided 750,000 dollars in scholarship funding for AIMS-Ghana students. �AIMS-Ghana does not award its own degrees but is affiliated to the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Cape Coast University,� he said. Prof Allotey commended the late President John Evans Atta Mills for being a strong supporter of the programme and President John Dramani Mahama for his support. �Government has also pledged half the cost towards the building of the AIMS-Ghana Centre,� he noted. Mr Thierry Zommahoun, Executive Director, AIMS-Next Einstein Initiative, said the AIMS model was unique in its pan-African focus, broad curriculum, focus on independent critical thinking inclusive of modern computation techniques and research component.
