Mr. Julius Debrah, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has called on residents of Accra to maintain good sanitation practices in their communities. The Minister said ensuring excellent sanitation was key to achieving the Better Ghana Agenda in the city and he would support the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to realise the vision of the President. Mr. Debrah made the call during a familiarization tour of some parts of Accra on Tuesday. He said it was improper for residents to continue dumping refuse in gutters and indulge in other insanitary habits as the city would be flooded during the rainy season. Mr. Debrah appealed to the Assembly to intensity its drive for internally generated fund through public/private partnership. Mr. Alfred Oko Vandapuje, the Mayor of Accra, acknowledged that the AMA was being confronted with some challenges, but said the Assembly was working to turn the challenges into fruitful opportunities. He said nine contractors were already working around the clock to tackle the sanitation situation in the city and those major drainage systems and roads would be constructed in addition to a Street Naming Project to be completed in 18 months as directed by the President. Mr. Vandapuje said dumping of liquid waste at Jame Town would soon be stopped as a modern way of treating such waste is under construction. He said the construction of 73 millennium city schools is ongoing with facilities including library, computer and science laboratory. The John Evans Atta Mills Educational Centre for Excellence, Zamarama School in Sukura, Old and New Lavender Hill, Mudor and Legon Water Treatment plants were some of the places visited.
