Dept. Commissioner of Ghana Revenue Authority Warns Tax Evaders

The Deputy Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Kwame Ofosuhene Apenteng has issued a stern warning to tax payers who shirk their obligations to the country. Speaking on Radio Gold on Thursday, Mr. Ofosuhene Apenteng warned tax evaders to refrain from such misconduct and ensure that they file their returns to the tax administrators. This he said would help the Revenue Authority to assess their tax payment system in order to ward off any inconsistencies. He explained that every tax payer is mandated by law to file his or her returns quarterly each year; failure to comply with the directive attracts penalties. According to him, the filing of the tax returns aids the GRA to conduct provisional and self-assessment of the tax payers financial statement in the year. He further stated that any individual who does not file his or her returns, or tend to evade the payment of his or her taxes, would be sanctioned by the tax authorities. He added that the Revenue Authority will arrest tax payers who tend to evade their obligations. He cited that the revenue Act 592 (72) mandates every person who falls within the tax net to file his or her returns with the exemption of employees whose incomes are solely derived from their remunerations. He therefore admonished tax payers to file their returns or face the necessary sanctions. In the course of the year, at the end of each quarter; you are supposed to pay so much. If you fail to pay, then of course we are going to apply sanctions. At the end of the four months, when you fail to meet the requirement where under the self-assessment for instance, you have to operate within 90%. If you fail to do that, then theres also a sanction, he said.
