Alhaji Mohammed Muniru, Upper East Regional Minister and his Deputy, Mr Daniel Syme have begun a week long courtesy calls on chiefs in the Upper East Region. The chiefs they visited on Wednesday include Naba Martin Abilba II, Zuarungu Chief of Bolgatanga East, Tongo Rana, Nana Sabalig Namalteng, Chief of Tongo, Naba Bawong of the Sekoti traditional area and Bon Naba, Alemyarim Salifu of Bongo. Alhaji Muniru said the visit was to inform them officially of their assumption of office and to express their gratitude to the chiefs and people of the region for the mandate given the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The Regional Minister called for peace, unity and a strong partnership in the administration of the region to enable him and his Deputy to work for the development of the region. He said for the region to thrive, there was the need to work towards the eradication of poverty, illiteracy and diseases, adding that, this could only be achieved if peace was sustained in the area. He assured the chiefs of an open door administration and urged them to help promote peace to ensure that their work becomes successful. Mr Martin Akanane, who spoke on behalf of the Zuarungu chief said the area was one of the oldest districts in the region but lags behind in terms of infrastructure. Bong Naba Alemyarim Salifu, called on government to establish a teacher training school in the district. He said though government plans to boost infrastructure in schools, that of Bongo was very urgent and crucial, because of the deprived nature of the district. He said the training school would also serve the increasing number of graduates from the Senior High Schools.
