Profile of Chief of Naval Staff

Real Admiral Geoffrey Mawuli Biekro is the Chief of Naval Staff, an appointment which took effect 3rd April 2013 with the flag rank of Rear Admiral which took retrospective effect from 28th March 2013. Until his appointment, he was the Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, a position which he held from 31st March 2009 and prior to his appointment as the Chief of Staff Officer of the Ghana Armed Forces he was the Chief Officer of the Ghana Navy. Rear Admiral Biekro was born on 28th August 1952 at Dodome in the Volta Region and was commissioned into the Ghana Navy as an Executive Officer on 20th December 1975 after his Basic Training at the Ghana Military Academy, Teshie and Riyal Naval College, Dartmouth, UK. He attended various specialized Military and Civil courses which include International Midshipmen and International Sub-Lieutenant technical courses at Royal Naval College (GAFCSC), Teshie in 1985 and pursued the Senior Command and staff course in the 1988/89 academic year, where he graduated as the best Naval Student. Rear Admiral Biekro also attended the Nasser Academy and High War College in Egypt in 2005 and obtained a Diploma in Strategic Studies with regards to civil courses he pursued both Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Philosophy (M.Phill) Degree courses in Development Studies at the University of Ghana Legon in the 2002/2003 and 2003/2004 academic year respectively. He also attended the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) between 1990 and 1992 and obtains a post graduate Diploma in Public Administration with distinction and holds a First Class Bachelor of Science Degree in Management Studies from the Pacific Southern University, California, USA. Rear Admiral Biekro also holds Diploma in Christian Counseling from the International Theological Seminary, USA, LLB (Hons) Degree from the University of Ghana Law School and currently pursuing the Barrister at Law Programme (Post LLB Professional Course) at the Ghana School of Law. He served onboard several ships as watch-keeping Officer, Executive Officer and commanding Officer and was a directing staff (DS) at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College after which he was posted to the Command and Staff College, Jaji, Nigeria as Directing Staff and also served as Military Assistant to the General Officer Commanding the Ghana Armed Forces and the Chief of the Defence Staff from 1992 to 1996. Rear Admiral Biekro served as the Director, Naval Training, Naval Headquarters from 2000-2002 and participated in the 18th Seapower symposium (Conference of the Chief of Navies Worldwide) at the Naval War College, Rhode Island, USA in October 2007 as a resource person and presented a well researched paper on the topic: �The concept of Global Fleet Station in Relation to Economic Security and Solutions in the Gulf of Guinea.� He presented a paper on the Maritime Security Challenges of Ghana at the African Center for Strategic Studies Workshop held in Accra, Ghana in 2006 and also presented a paper at the first ever International Oil and Gas seminar in Ghana. Rear Admiral Biekro is married with four children. His hobbies include jogging and listening to Gospel Music.
