The Leadership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has indicated that they will likely call off their strike if the Minister of Finance orders the payment of their outstanding market premium arrears.
The Doctors have entered the second week of their nationwide strike in a bid to get government to pay the arrears of their 2012 market premium.
They however rescinded their decision to stop attending to emergency cases after a council meeting of the leadership of the Association where they deliberated on a new proposal from government concerning the mode and terms of payment.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, the President of the GMA, Dr. Opoku Adusei stated that due to the failure of government to implement resolutions in past Memoranda of Understating (MoU), Doctors will now ensure that resolutions are implemented to the latter.
�We want to see clear instructions from the authorities to the Controller and Accountant General�s Department on what we agreed on and let me correct that we are not talking about lump sum payment as you could see in the MoU�Simply put, let�s give clear instructions that payment will be made per the agreement.�
Dr. Adusei added that Doctors across the country have been ordered to �continue to do emergencies and see in-patients and emergencies include labour and delivery and caesarian sessions and they must not tell the people that we are on total strike; we are not.�
