A pressure group, Alliance For Accountable Government (AFAG) has threatened a court action if the Ghana Police Service continues to stop them from embarking on their �long awaited - Mieku� demonstration. The police service over the weekend issued a statement restricting every group from embarking on a demonstration or any other mass activity until proceedings at the Supreme Court are over. One can recall that the group had to cancel its demonstration slated for 18th April 2013 because the police secured an order to stop them on the grounds that it does not have sufficient personnel. This has however not gone down well with the group since they suspect the police are intentionally doing all in its power to stop them from embarking on their demonstration. Even though DSP Cephas Arthur has debunked claims that they are not placing a ban on demonstrations because of AFAG, Dr Ayew Afriyie, president of the group, told Kwami Sefa-Kayi in an interview on Monday that they believed the police is doing that because of them; saying �based on their (Police) posture in the past, you can never move perceptions from becoming reality because the inevitable has happened�. He has described the police action as needless and provocative, adding, �we are taking this to court�. �We have stated clearly that this is needless, and it is very provocative and we are taking this to court. How can this happen under a democratic dispensation? Homowo (a festival of the Gas) is coming and they will be faced with the decision of stopping them especially when the court proceedings extend to more than three months and we will see if they will be able to do that (stopping them)� he stated.
