The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has described as appalling the manner in which government and its agencies are handling the issues concerning their strike.
In a press statement released by the GMA on Monday, the doctors said it is clear �the government is not committed to ensuring a speedy resolution of this impasse.�
The GMA buttressed their claim saying �At a meeting with the Minister of Health on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, GMA was informed that government has accepted liability for the Conversion Difference and that government was ready to restore and refund all arrears accrued. However, a letter of commitment requested by GMA from government to reassure its members never came from government.�
The GMA also sighted an instance where on the April 24, 2013 a meeting that was supposed to have brokered by the Secretary General of the TUC to ensure resolution of the on-going strike action never came off.
The GMA in the statement further made reference to a meeting that was scheduled for April 29, 2013 at the instance of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) was also called off because the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations failed to show up.
In an interview on Eyewitness News, Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Justice Yankson said the strike continues unabated. �From last week till today scheduled meetings that were supposed to have taken place, for whatever reason the medical association goes to the venue, all the other parties show up and then the government side refuses to show up.�
Public sector doctors have been on strike for about three weeks over salary arrears, pension and market premium on the new pay structure.
