General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party, Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, has thrown more light on the main reason why Lawyers representing his party filed a petition at the Supreme Court, seeking to nullify the results which saw incumbent President John Mahama and his governing National Democratic Congress retain power. In an interview with Okay FM, Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie alleged that the Electoral Commission of Ghana laid the foundation for the fraudulent acts to occur during the elections and President Mahama, as the leader of the country took advantage of the situation and institutionalized it. The party contends the president secured the win through fraud. Chairman for the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan on December 9, 2012, declared President Mahama winner of the Presidential contest. The president obtained 50.70% of the votes cast whilst Nana Akufo-Addo pulled 47.74% of total votes cast. The NPP rejected the results, claiming the elections were rigged in favour of President Mahama and indicated they intend to challenge the results at the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court. Leaders of the party insisted there was �incontrovertible evidence� of widespread irregularities which favoured the president and greatly impacted the final outcome of the poll.
