Kantamanto Fire: 'This Should Never Have Happened' - Amissah Arthur To Victims

The Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur has assured the victims of the fire that engulfed the Kantamanto market on Sunday that government will do all in its power to ensure such a catastrophe does not re-occur. "This is another disaster that should never have happened... I have asked the Ministry of Interior to institute a commission to find out what has actually happened, the causes of this fire, what to do in the meantime and what to do to avert anymore fire disasters in our markets." According to him, structures will be put in place to ensure a more safe, secure and well planned market will be established to boost economic activity and secure livelihoods that were destroyed as a result of the fire. Property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis were destroyed when fire gutted the Kantamanto market on Sunday morning. According to personnel from the Fire Service, the location of the shops and the geography of the area affected the fire fighting efforts. The Vice President, who was accompanied by the Accra Metropolitan Authority boss, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuiye, Greater Accra Minister, Julius Debrah, Member of Parliament for the Odododiodio Constituency, Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye, and other government officials, empathized with the victims and assured them of government's support. �We need to do something in the meantime to help them to put their lives together again and I am asking the agencies of government, the NADMO particularly to mobilise their resources to support the women whose goods have been damaged in this fire.� �I am also asking the Minister of Finance to invite the financial institutions that have resources to support these women." H.E. Amissah Arthur expressed government's gratitude to personnel from the Police and Fire Service for the efforts to bring the situation under control and protect the people from harm. He called on NADMO and other corporate organisations to come to the aid of the affected victims.
