The Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana, William Boateng has challenged the managing editor for the Insight newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr., to disclose the main reason why his newspaper has tamed its tongue for long but out of the blue, set an agenda to scuffle plans by publishing salaries of staffs who work at ECG in the wake of a demand for an increment in tariffs.

Why now? Why didnt anybody bother to publish the salaries of ECG workers before but decided to do that now? It clearly shows that someone has a personal agenda. I believe the person is doing so because we have written to the PURC to increase our current tariff, he said.

Speaking on Okay FM, a taciturn William Boateng who sounded a little snobbish in his response told the host of the Ade Akyen Abia show that since there is no proof to attest to what the Insight published, then he can boldly tell Ghanaians that there is no iota of truth in the story.

The Insight newspaper published that for the year 2013, the Head of Department for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), takes home mouth watering GHC232,593.00 per annum, which came with an allowance of GHC58,148.25 per annum, a salary plus allowances of GHC290,471.25 per annum and a salary plus allowances of GHC 24,228.44 per month.

Part of the publication also reported that a private secretary who works at ECG takes a gross salary of GHC57,056.00 per annum, GHC14,264.00 of allowance per annum, GHC 71,320.00 salary plus allowances per annum and salary allowances of GHC5,943.33 per month. A labourer takes a gross salary of GHC 14,410.00 per annum, GHC 3,602.50 of allowance per annum, GHC 18,012.50 salary plus allowances per annum and salary allowances of GHC 1,501.04 per month.

Reacting to the news, Mr. William Boateng described it as false. All I can say is that I havent read but the newspaper but there is no truth in what it has reported. There must be proof in a form of pay slip to show that someone is taking this amount home, he said.
