Chaos In Ashiaman...

One person is reported injured at Ashaiman where irate drivers are protesting the bad nature of their roads. The man is said to have sustained the injury from a stone which was being thrown against the military and police personnel who have been dispatched to the area to restore calm. He has since been rushed to a nearby hospital. According to Accra-base Radio Gold, the protestors are attacking the military and police personnel who have been dispatched to the area to restore calm. According to the report, the military are giving warning shots to disperse the crowd in order to get the Ghana National Fire Service to put out the burning tyres which has resulted in a thick black smoke that has engulfed parts of the municipality. ACP David Eklu who also spoke to Radio Gold said some criminal elements have taken advantage of the situation and are attacking the police and military. He said, so far, they have been able to manage the situation. He explained, however, that the traffic situation was not good and advised motorists to use the motorway roundabout in order to avoid the mounting traffic around Ashaiman municipality. According to other media reports, the angry youth, numbering over 100, have also taken over the tollbooths on the motorway. They are said to be looting monies and properties in the tollbooths, while demanding monies from motorists who are stuck in traffic.
