Police Guard Arrested For Robbing Judge

The Police Officer, who allegedly aided in the robbery of an Appeal court judge in Tema, a suburb of Accra, was yesterday arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court on a charge of robbery. Number 48173, General Constable Stephen Kwenor Appenteng, who was detailed for night armed guard duty for the week at the complainants residence, armed with AK47 rifle number AE 405453, allegedly aided five accomplices to raid the home of Justice Senyo Dzamefe at about 7:45 pm on June 7, 2013. General Constable Stephen Kwenor Appenteng and his accomplices allegedly made away with a deck, two laptops, three mobile phones, ignition keys of two cars and unspecified sum of money and documents. The accused person allegedly denied knowledge of the crime, claiming that he was admitted at the Tema General Hospital on that fateful day, June 7, 2013. However, investigation revealed that he was admitted on June 8, 2013. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery before the court, presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri. He has been remanded into custody to re-appear before the court on July 9, 2013. The fact of the case is that on June 7, 2013, at about 7:45pm, General Constable Stephen Kwenor Appenteng, armed with AK47 rifle number AE 405453 plus 10 rounds of ammunition, reported for duty at the complainants residence, where he was expected to close at 5:00 am the next day, June 8, 2013. The prosecutor, DSP Reydolph Agyemang told the court that he left his duty post a few minutes thereafter, with his loaded rifle to Ashaiman, and at about 1:00am, led a gang of about five accomplices, armed with hammer, machete and industrial cutter to the complainants residence. He said General Constable Stephen Kwenor Appenteng stood out and watched his accomplices as they cut aside electrical wire gauze installed on the fence wall around the premises. According to the prosecutor, on gaining access into the compound, the accomplices mercilessly assaulted the security guard who was on the verge of raising alarm, adding that the rest of the accomplices went into the house to take possession of the said items, whiles one stayed with the security guard and manhandle him. The complainant,, who had locked himself and his family in the master bedroom managed to contact the police patrol team while the alleged robbers were breaking the door. The accomplices, however, fled with the items they had stolen after hearing the police patrol team approaching the scene, the prosecutor told the court. DSP Agyemang mentioned that when the accused person was inquired of his whereabout, he indicated that he was admitted at the Tema General Hospital after he had left his duty post on the night of June 7, 2013. The prosecutor recounted that investigation found the statement of the accused person to be untrue, as he made that excuse in an attempt to cover up his involvement in the robbery. He said it was discovered through investigation that the accused person went to the hospital on June 8, 2013, after 5:00am, secured an OPD document and falsified the date on the card to June 7, 2013. Meanwhile, the folder, which he never presented to undergo process of treatment, reflected his date and time of report to the hospital at June 8, 2013, the prosecutor noted.
