27-Yr-Old Soldier Poisened To Death At Burma Camp

The Cantonments Police have begun investigations into the circumstances that led to the tragic death of a 27-year old soldier at Burma Camp in Accra. The victim, Lance Corporal Francis Amadu, attached to 6 Battalion of Infantry, Tamale, was suspected to have been poisoned at a birthday party after drinking a glass of fruit juice. One person, also a soldier attached to the 5 Battalion of Infantry, Burma Camp, according to information available to DAILY GUIDE, has been arrested for questioning by the police. Confirming the death to DAILY GUIDE, Chief Superintendent Frank Adufati, Accra Regional Crime Officer, said the incident occurred on June 30, 2013 at Burma Camp around 9:30pm. The deceased, who was stationed in Tamale, had come to Accra for a short course and was lodging with a friend at Burma Camp. On that fateful day, and before leaving for the birthday party, Francis Amadu entered the kitchen of Lance Corporal Kwabena David and prepared some rice and stew to eat. After taking the food, the victim left for the birthday party which was also taking place in the same area around 9pm. While making merry, Francis Amadu took a glass of fruit juice served by the host at the party. Instantly, the victim started to complain of stomach ache so he was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for medical care. Unfortunately, shortly on arrival at the health facility, Lance Corporal Amadu passed on. The matter was reported to the military police at Burma Camp, before it was finally referred to the Cantonments police for investigations. This led to the arrest of the host of the party by the police for questioning. Chief Superintendent Adufati said even though the police suspected foul play, it was yet to be established whether the deceased was poisoned at the party or in the house. He said police had retrieved sample of the fruit juice taken together with the rice and stew the deceased ate before his tragic death for examination. The left-over rice and stew prepared by the deceased together with the fruit juice had been retrieved by the police and taken to the Ghana Standards Authority for toxicology. The police have also made a request for a coroner�s report of the deceased to help in investigations.
