MINORITY MEMBERS of Parliament yesterday greeted intermittent power outages in the chamber of the house while business was in session with a shout of �dumso oo� �dumso� and �yema mo dumso ooo� expecting the Majority members to respond �Yaa Mahama� but instead they also jeered at their Minority colleagues on the opposite side.
The intermittent power outages occurred at a time the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Sene East in the Brong Ahafo Region, Dominic Napare, was making a statement on the floor of the house on the need to develop the Digya National Park, the second biggest national game park after Mole National Park located in his constituency.
According to the NDC MP, the Digya National Park which falls within the Sene East and West districts covering a total land area of 3,478 square kilometres had been left undeveloped even though the park had a huge tourism potential.
He said the park which also extends to part of Afram Plains and Sekyere West districts is home to diverse animals including elephants, buffalos, leopards, waterbucks, bushbucks, white colobus, mona monkeys, patas, green monkeys, baboons, porcupines, rhinoceroses, gracious wild beasts and species of duiker.
The MP explained that apart from that, nocturnal species like servals, jackals, genets, civet cats, galagos and pottos are also found at the park.
He said though all these animals were at the park, it was not open to visitors because there were no receptive facilities and good roads to make the park easily accessible.
He said for the Digya Park to contribute effectively to national development and local economy, facilities such as camp sites, viewing platforms, trails, game viewing roads, water transport facilities and other facilities should be built to help create employment for the teeming youth in the area.
�Digya is the only wildlife territory in Ghana that has the Volta Lake at its borders with the two arms of the Volta Lake, Digya and Obosom rivers curve around the almost peninsular park increasing its sight attraction potential which is only peculiar to it.�
The Sene East MP therefore asked the Ministry of Tourism, the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, the Public Private Partnership minister, the regional coordinating council and district assemblies to collaborate in order to fully develop the unique Digya National Park into a number one game park in the country.
