The Mamprobi Police have arrested a suspected armed robber who attacked a mini drinking depot yesterday afternoon at Bamboi using a locally manufactured pistol.
Patrick Akayachum, together with his accomplice whose name was only given as David, now on the run, attacked the depot, taking away a bag they thought contained money and other valuables.
Their attempt to escape on a motor bike however failed when Patrick fell from the bike. Some youth of the area, who were at the scene, quickly grabbed him and subjected him to severe beatings.
The timely intervention of the Mamprobi police however, saved Patrick from being set on fire by the angry mob. But his accomplice, David who was riding the motorbike, managed to escape arrest.
The locally made pistol used in the robbery attack was later retrieved from the suspect by the police. Briefing Daily Guide, Superintendent Peter A. K. Ayiresang, the Mamprobi District Commander, said around 11:30am yesterday, the Mamprobi Police had a tip off that a mob had grabbed an armed robber and wanted to burn him to death.
Police proceeded to the scene and spotted suspect Patrick Akayachum being beaten by the mob. Police rescued him and transported the suspect to the station for interrogation.
Later, information gathered indicated that Patrick Akayachum and his accomplice, both residents of Mamobi, came to Bamboi on a robbery mission using an unregistered motorbike. On reaching the mini drinking depot, the two spotted a luggage believed to contain money and stopped.
Patrick quickly got down from the motorbike and entered the depot to pick the bag when the owner raised an alarm for help.
Patrick quickly sat on the motorbike which was then in motion, but unfortunately for him, he fell from the motorbike when they attempted to escape with the bag. He was immediately grabbed by the angry mob and nearly burnt alive.
When the bag was later opened by the police at the station, it contained clothing and other items.
The suspect, who is currently in police custody, will be sent to court soon after investigations are completed, according to Superintendent Ayiresang.
