Mr Julius Debrah, Greater Accra Regional Minister, on Tuesday presented plastic cups and exercise books to pupils in the Ga West Municipality to mark 'My First Day at School". The Minister and his team visited the Ofankor M/A Primary and Junior High Schools (JHS), Pokuase Methodist School, Kuntunse D/A Primary and JHS, Sacred Heart Anglican Basic School and Sapeiman M/A Primary and JHS. "My First Day at School" concept was instituted years ago by the government to meet new children in public schools on their first day of enrolment and encourage them on the need to stay in schools. Mr Debrah said the initiative was to make education accessible to all children as part of government's resolve for every child to have access to basic education. He called on parents to complement government�s efforts towards education by providing children with their needs. Mr Debrah also encouraged the pupils to take their studies seriously and choose successful people in society as their role models. Mrs Elizabeth A. De-Souza, Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, expressed worry over the unwillingness of some parents to send their children to school. She urged parents to ensure that the newly enrolled children did not drop from the schools because they would be the future leaders. Ms Mercy Kesse, Headmistress of Pokuase Methodist Basic School, said the gesture would encourage the pupils to stay in school. She said the books would be distributed to the pupils present to serve as a reminder to them whenever they were on holiday. Ms Kesse expressed gratitude to the effort being made by government to ensure that every child had access to education in the country. Ms Wendy Tabi, a pupil of the Sacred Heart Anglican Basic Schools, said the books donated, would complement those that her parents had bought.
