NPPS Letter Is A Desperate Move...

The Deputy General Secretary in charge of operations for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. George Lawson has described as a desperate move, a letter from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the Council of State over the appointment of the next Chairman of the Electoral Commission. If people who believe in the rule of law are asking for this and the constitution is very clear on all these things, then they are not people who believe in the rule of law. They are people who are desperate, they want their way and because they are not getting their way they try to do all manner of things, he stated. The letter requested that the Council of State intervene in the appointment of the next Chairman of the Commission. Although the President has the right to appoint the Chairman and the Deputies, the NPP has called for broader consultation on who succeeds Dr. Afari Gyan whose tenure ends next year. But in an interview with Citi News, Mr. Lawson questioned why the NPP has asked the Council of State intervene. According to him, if the NPP believes in the rule of law, they should not be asking for this intervention since the constitution is clear on who appoints and who should be consulted. In his opinion, the NPPs call for an intervention is an indication that they dont believe in the rule of law and it is unfortunate.
