We Will Not Accept Tariff Increment

The Tema District Council(TDC) of Labour has indicated that it will not accept the recent tariff increment by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC). The PURC announced an increment in tariffs which is expected to take effect from October 1, 2013. But in an interview with Citi News, the Chairman of the Tema District Council of Labour of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Wilson Agana, stated that the council was not prepared to pay the new tariffs introduced by the PURC. We cannot afford to pay, never, and we are prepared to fight to the end. Just about a week ago, the transport fares were increased by 20 per cent. It is no joke, school will resume very soon and they are doing all these things, he said. Mr. Agana also alleged that the increment had already taken effect although the PURC claimed the increment will take effect from October 1, 2013. Those who are paying GHc18 and GHc15 for prepaid services are now paying about GHc25 and GHc30. If you watch carefully, the tariffs were increased before the final announcement on Wednesday. In his opinion, the increasing cost of living in the country did not correspond with the increment in the wages of workers.
