Bongo Jail Breaker Re-Arrested

Dennis Anyagre Atiga, one of the two suspects who escaped from the Bongo police cells, has been re-arrested and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by the Bongo District Magistrate Court. It would be recalled that The Mirror in its September 28, 2013 edition reported that 20-year-old Atiga broke jail together with Emmanuel Akolgo on September 18, 2013 at about 8:30 p.m. In line with the rules of the Ghana Police Service, the two police personnel on duty at the time of the escape were given a grace period of 10 days to produce the escapees. Pursuant to that, the police intensified the search, which led them to Zio in neighbouring Burkina Faso where with the help of the police in that country they re-arrested Atiga, who has been accused of murder. The Bongo District Magistrate, Madam Vivian Yanusah, who handed out the sentence, warned Atiga not to attempt any more escapes, since the law would catch up with him wherever he would go. Meanwhile, Atiga is scheduled to reappear before a higher court on October 23, 2013 in connection with his murder trial. According to the police, the docket had already been forwarded to the Attorney Generals Department for advice. Atiga and Akolgo, who were on remand at the Bongo Police cells, escaped through the roof of their cell on September 18, 2013. Akolgo is, however, still on the run.
