A man who entered the offices of State Insurance Company at Adabraka, in Accra on Saturday and made away with two laptops, a digital camera, a Samsung tablet and GH�800, has been arrested, thanks to the vigilance of a taxi driver who gave him up to the police.
The suspect, Richard Essien Kwame Danso, 32, managed to outwit two private securitymen on duty at about 6 a.m. and entered the offices.
The Adabraka District Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ebenezer Nketiah told newsmen yesterday that the securitymen spotted the suspect when he stepped out of the premises of the company.
He said when the suspect was questioned he told the securitymen that he was directed by the branch manager to pick the items in the office for him.
DSP Nketiah said later when it occurred to the securitymen that Danso might be a thief, he had already jumped into a taxi cab and the car had sped off.
He said the suspect �chartered� the taxi to �Tip Toe Lane�, at Kwame Nkrumah Circle to sell the booty.
On reaching the place, the Crime Officer said, the suspect re-directed the driver to Accra, but his mannerisms raised the suspicion of the driver who drove him to the Adabraka Police station.
DSP Nketiah said a search conducted in a bag carried by Danso revealed the items, GH�800 and a complimentary card.
He said when the suspect was interrogated he initially said the items belong to him.
He said his outfit called the number on the complimentary card and the receiver confirmed theft in the office.
He said some personnel were detailed to the office to conduct further investigations, noting that a play back of the close circuit television (CCTV) showed the suspect stealing the items and the money.
He said the two private security men were detained but were later granted bail, saying the suspect was assisting with investigation after which he would be put before court.
DSP Nketiah commended the driver for exposing the suspect and urged other drivers, especially commercial drivers, to be vigilant and expose such criminals.
He also urged companies to recruit qualified private security personnel to guard their premises and also fix CCTVs in their premises to detect criminal acts.
