The Ghana Prisons Service is likely to struggle to feed inmates in prisons across the country if it fails to pay its suppliers' outstanding bills for foods served.
The suppliers say the Service owes for food items provided for almost 2yrs. One of the suppliers, Madam Adesou Ayeko who supplies foodstuffs to all the prisons in the country says the service owes her millions of cedis.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Madam Adesou who refused to mention the said amount on air said �I have not been paid since 2011 to 2013 ... And the amount runs into billions of billions.�
According to her, she has stopped supplying to the prisons service because of their refusal to pay them.
�I am not supplying again because I don�t have any money. I don�t even have money to eat. I took the money from the bank with interest and now they don�t want to pay us. How do I pay the bank and the interest,� he said.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Police Service, ASP Francis Kwakye in an interview with Eyewitness News denied the allegation saying �my investigation with the accountant revealed that the two year time span is false and not true.�
He said: �I am surprised at the allegations. We started working with them a long time ago and they know the process. As soon as they supply, we don�t pay them immediately, it takes some time because it has to go through some process.�
According to him, some of the suppliers have been paid.
He therefore called on the suppliers to exercise restraint because they would at all cost receive their money adding that the payments go through some processes.
