NPP Chairman Killer Caged

Alhaji Martey Tei Korley alias Commando, the self-confessed murderer of Michael Patrick Baah, Vice Chairman of Dome Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been denied bail by an Accra Circuit Court. The accused person, who is a driver, is standing trial in connection with the death of Baah after he allegedly confessed to the killing on an audio recording. The trial judge, Francis Obiri, in a ruling on a bail application filed by counsel for Commando, Jah Josiah, stated he would not grant bail to Martey due to the seriousness of the offence. He consequently had the accused person remanded in police custody for him to reappear on December 17, 2013. Jah Josiah, in seeking bail for his client, told the court that his client was innocent of the charges levelled against him, adding that they would in due course, prove that to the court. He said the accused person is a responsible family man who would not abscond if granted bail, adding that Martey had enough people to stand surety for him. He consequently prayed the court to let his client breathe some air of freedom but the trial judge denied him bail. The suspect, also known as Mohammed, had been charged with possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority and murder and he pleaded not guilty to possessing one wrapper of wee while his plea on murder is yet to be taken. The facts of the case as presented by Chief Superintendent Duuti Tuaruka, the prosecuting officer are that on June 6, 2009 the NPP Vice Chairman Baah was murdered in cold blood but the reason behind the killing became a mystery. According to him, the police never relented in their attempt to find the perpetrators of the crime and had since intensified their intelligence network with the view of finding the perpetrators of the crime. He said on November 16, 2013, police had information that the suspect was heard telling some people that he was behind the murder of Baah on that fateful day. Furthermore, he stated that the accused person, who was being recorded without his knowledge, said he was a contract killer and the person, who is a witness in this case, later forwarded the tape to the police. In addition, he said the witness who did the recording was advised by the police to get more information from the suspect. He therefore recorded another conversation he had with Commando, during which he (Commando) boasted that as a contract killer, he was ready to go into any execution if only he was paid. Explaining further, he said after the conversation was taped and forwarded to the police the suspect was arrested at Nima and a search conducted on him yielded one wrapper of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
