Step Up Public Education On Fundamental Rights

An official of CHRAJ has appealed to Civil Society Organizations to do more to fend off human rights violations and abuses through public education. Mr. Anthony Aidoo, acting Ashanti Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, said people needed to be assisted to have better understanding of the protection offered them by the law. He said it was through this that they would be empowered to stand up against injustice and impunity. Mr Aidoo was speaking at a forum held at Pankrono in Kumasi to create awareness on human rights in the areas of education, health and environment. The programme was organized by the Bureau of Sustainable Integrated Development, a local NGO, and brought together students, teachers, chiefs, members of the unit committees, and market women. Mr. Aidoo appealed to victims of abuse to be bold and report to the appropriate state institutions for appropriate action. They should be eager to defend their fundamental rights and freedom. A Programme Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Dawood Abass, said it was important to enforce laws on the environment. The NGO made available about 1,000 text books and novels for distribution to 10 basic schools in the community.
