Fire Guts Old Parliament House in Accra...Sole Commissioner's Records Burnt

Reports reaching Peacefmonline.com indicates that the old Parliament House fire outbreak which was brought under control has resurged. Fire gutted the old Parliament House near the Arts Centre in Accra. The fire was believed to have started at about 4am and razed down the entire records office of the Judgment Debt Commission and the main hall where hearing was being held. Properties of the Commission like computers, printers, air conditioners and stationery, including those in the office of the sole Commissioner, Justice Yaw Apau, were not spared in the destruction. However, workers at the Judgment Debt Commission and other adjourning departments like the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) had come to work only to see their office complex besieged by fire fighters. The old parliament edifice opposite the Kwame Nkrumah mausoleum along the Accra High Street also houses the CHRAJs Finance, PR and Research departments and all have been affected. Dozens of fire fighters are on the scene battling the blaze. The immediate cause of what started the blaze and its resurgence is yet to be investigated. Meanwhile the area has been sealed off. The Old Parliament House is where the Judgment Debt Commission, which has been looking into monies paid to individuals and organisations as judgment debts, has been having its sittings. Reports indicate that the main chamber where the sole commissioner sat has been severely affected by the fire.
