The Society of Professional Journalist-Ghana incorporated under the laws of Ghana. has since April 2013 been working in Order to form a stronger media union, establish integrity, ensure professionalism , promote the general Welfare of media practitioners, provide for the common defence of our nation and secure the benefits of freedom and independence of the media as guaranteed by article 162(1). This is the preamble of the SPJ establishing the Constitution for the Society of Professional Journalists-Ghana. The SPJ is working to organize the media as a well representative body to reflect the mood and work for the benefit of modern Ghanaian media practitioners and to help practitioners conduct themselves in a more responsible and professional manner. We in the SPJ believe that media training either acquiring a diploma or a degree remains too broad for practitioners to grasp and understand and write or comment on modern knowledge and our call is that journalists should not be limited to broad media studies rather they should seek to specialize in a particular area of knowledge. By this practice we in the SPJ will bring on board people with knowledge from political science, law, education, health, marketing, management, business, ICT, and many more and graft on their talents and expertise best media practice in a professional environment so that they can educate and inform from a background of knowledge and authority in communicating information. With the liberalization of the media and our current strength of over 800 active members nation wide, we do understand that it is not everybody who has had the best of education to work in the media and this is a major weakness in trying to discharge our professional duties. It has therefore become prudent to introduce the media education fund for professional development of members who may come from different backgrounds. However with even our current membership spread nationwide we have indeed expanded the frontiers of the media to be more representative and reflective of the true landscape of our dear profession. The SPJ also has plans to establish major libraries and media research centers in all the regional capitals in collaboration with stakeholders who share in our vision in trying to create a responsible media by first educating our members. Ghanaian journalists have for so long been exposed to too many uncalculated risks whose effects can be reduced through carefully thought out plans by introducing the media welfare and insurance fund to take care of the welfare of journalists in times of difficulties while discharging their duties. Founding members of the SPJ are seasoned journalists such as A.C. Ohene of TV Africa, Alhassan. S.Suhuyini of Radio Gold, Samuel Dowuona of Multimedia group, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, PaaKwesi Edwin Arthur of New Independent newspaper, Isaac Yeboah of P&P newspaper, Najib M.Iddissah and Alhaji Abu Issa Monnie of Peacefm as founder. Kwasi Amoafo a legal practitioner is the Administrator. The SPJ humbly and gladly welcomes applications from journalists willing to join a representative professional body that will work for them.
