Contraband Goods Destroyed In Kumasi

The Ashanti Regional Office of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has burnt quantities of seized items at a refuse dump site at Dompaose, near Kumasi. The prohibited goods which have the street value of about $76,887.00 were seized through the vigilance of the Rapid Deployment unit, of the division on the Mampong and Ejisu routes. The items include 144 boxes of cigarettes, 45 sacks of empty imitate HP cartridges, and 10 boxes of assorted drugs, firecrackers, a set of military uniforms and plastic toy raffles. Briefing the press, Mr. Kwame Oteng, Chief Revenue Officer said the unit had a tip-off about the smuggled items and intercept them. He said the estimated total revenue and preliminary penalty on the smuggled items was estimated at about GH773,382. The contraband goods, according to him, were not supposed to be imported and commended his officers for a good work done. Within the year, Mr. Oteng said, a lots of unaccustomed goods such as milk power, rice, alcohol, electronic gadgets, foot wears, non alcoholic drinks like Tampico have been seized by his outfit. He disclosed that a total of 394 drums of ethanol alcohol currently at their custody had been impounded awaiting directives from the headquarters for auctioning. The exercise was carried under the supervising of officials of the Ghana Police Service, Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA), Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and Environmental and Sanitation Unit of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
