Activities Of Squatters Threaten Kufours Airport West Residence

As many well-meaning Ghanaians were praying for the leaders of the country, amidst sound economic prospects, squatters at the Airport West private Residence of ex-President John Agyekum Kufour, were on December 31, 2013 busy installing septic tanks. It was an eye-sore, when The Herald visited the Airport West area, squatters have taken over the railways area and doing their own thing in blatant disregard of the by-laws of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). The activities of the squatters, have destroyed the walls of Danny Wiredu, a gentleman who shares a wall with ex-President Kufour. He had his wall pulled down by flood waters as a result of the construction of a septic tank being constructed by the squatters living behind his residence and that of the ex-President and about twenty metres close to the Accra- Tema Asaprotsonaa railway line at the plush Airport West area in Accra. The illicit activities of the squatters in the area, are causing harm to life and property in the area. Some of the squatters, have gone ahead to construct concrete buildings instead of the normal kiosk that were associated with slum areas in the city. While, others were busy putting up these concrete buildings, behind the ex-Presidents residence, a handful of them were also constructing drains. The activities of the squatters, has made the area a flood prone area and it get flooded at the least down pour. As results of these, ex-president has had his 18-feet security wall pulled down by flooded waters on two occasions. Speaking with some of the squatters, they claim the area was made available to them by the Greater Railways Managers, after paying a token to them. They blatantly told this reporter that the area was duly allocated to them by the railways officials and that they have formalized their stay in the area with the land owners.
