Cancel Kumawu Polls

A group operating under the name Concerned NPP Members of Kumawu Constituency in the Ashanti region has called on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to cancel the outcome of a supposed primary in the area. According to the irate group, during the recent primary of the party in the area to elect polling station and constituency executives to serve the party, several people were prevented from taking part in the polls. The group accused the Member of Parliament (MP) of the area, Philip Basoah and the NPP Constituency Chairman for Kumawu, Joseph Danso of taking steps to ensure that only their favourites took part in the important exercise. Addressing a press conference at Kumawu, R. Osei Acheampong of Dadease, who spoke on behalf of the group, alleged that the MP and the Constituency NPP Chairman connived with the Ashanti Regional NPP leadership to hatch that diabolic plan. Osei Acheampong claimed due to a legal issue in the area, the MP and the party chairman assured everybody that the NPP would not organize elections until the legal issue is properly addressed for peace to prevail. According to him, to the surprise of his group, the MP and the party chairman secretly distributed nomination forms to their favourites in the constituency and also went ahead to organize the polling station and constituency elections without their knowledge. Osei Acheampong called on the NPP National Executive Committee (NEC) to address the problems in the constituency and also declare the supposed elections null and void from the polling station to constituency level. The group said, Kumawu constituency should be excluded from all the programmes of the party with respect to its internal politics and general matters since none of the provisions of the NEC that constituted guidelines for the elections were adhered to. The group also appealed to NPPs NEC to take serious view of the issues raised and address them by annulling all the selections made by the constituency chairman, the MP and their cohorts. The partys leadership must create independent electoral committee to supervise the polling station and constituency elections of the party in the area to ensure fairness, openness and transparency.
