Doctor Causes Arrest Of Ex-Husband

A Medical Doctor has caused the arrest of her ex-husband, whom she claimed has been putting her through emotional torture, since their divorce in 2012. Owusu Kwabena Cephas was accused by his ex wife of sending her romantic text messages and calling her during odd hours. The suspect, a freight forwarder, was arrested by the police after a complaint was lodged by his ex-wife, claiming that the actions of her ex-husband was causing her to be constantly unhappy, miserable, humiliated, ridiculed, afraid, jittery and depressed. The accused, who was put before an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Ms Helen Vivian Boafo, pleaded not guilty to the charge of emotional, verbal or psychological abuse, contrary to section 1(b) of the Domestic Violence Act 732/2007. He was granted a self-recognition bail and is expected to re-appear before the court on January 28, 2014. The facts of the case are that they were once a couple, but during the year 2012 a misunderstanding ensued between them, which led to the dissolution of their marriage in court. According to the prosecutor, Detective Inspector Kofi Atimbere, after the divorce, the accused still harasses her, calling her at odd hours. He said the complainant warned him on several occasion to desist from that but he refused, adding that the complainant as a result lodged a complaint at the Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) and the accused was arrested.
