College Teachers Embark On Indefinite Strike For Improved Conditions

Teachers of the country's Colleges of Education have embarked on an indefinite sit down strike over their condition of service. The teachers claim since the elevation of the colleges to tertiary status, nothing has been done to improve upon their condition. General Secretary of Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana, CETAG, Prince Obeng-Himah told Radio Ghana that the Ministry of Education and the National Council for Tertiary Education have failed to honour their responsibilities to the teachers. Mr Obeng-Himah said until their concerns are addressed, they will not go back to the classroom. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education says the industrial action embarked upon by Teachers of the Colleges of Education is uncalled for. P.R.O of the Ministry, Paul Krampah told Radio Ghana all the issues raised by the teachers are being addressed and there is therefore no need for them to go on strike. He said the Ministry will meet the teachers on Wednesday at the National Labour Commission to try and resolve the issues.
