School Bus Crashes At Abesim

A bus carrying 41 pupils after school on Monday had a terrible road crash on the Abesim-Tanoso road, injuring many of the school students. Chief Inspector Francis Addo, the Brong Ahafo Regional Station Officer of the Motto Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), told the GNA that the accident happened when the children were being carried to their various homes. He said four of the children who were in serious condition had been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. Chief Inspector Addo said 30 were treated and discharged whilst seven including the driver, Ernest Torchy, aged 51, are on admission and are in stable condition. Chief Inspector Addo said the cause of the accident had not yet been established but it might have been due to excessive loading. Chief Inspector Addo said based on complaints by the general public, the MTTD had sent letters to all private schools in the Sunyani Municipality for a meeting to discuss the poor condition of their vehicles and issue of over loading of the buses but the Association of Private Schools had not responded. He therefore advised parents to identify important matters concerning the welfare of their children for discussion at Parent/Teachers Association (PTA) meetings.
