It Is Common Knowledge That NPP Is Akan Dominated Party

A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Member of Parliament for Techiman South Constituency, Hon Adjei Mensah has advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to make their executive positions open to every member irrespective of their ethnic background as this will clear the perception that NPP is Akan dominated party. The advice from the NDC MP came after the National Organizer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Yaw Boateng Gyan and a leading member of the opposition NPP, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe both asserted that NPP is neck-deep in tribalism as positions in the party are dominated by Akans, comprising of Akyems and Ashantis. Commenting on the issue, the NDC MP asserted on Okay Fm that one of the reasons some Ghanaians did not vote for the New Patriotic Party had to do with the perception that the party is Akan based, adding this should inform the NPP to strategically choose National Executives from different ethnic backgrounds. Though he did not openly condemn tribal politics since he believes every political party has dominant tribal groupings, which has its negatives and positives, he admitted playing the tribal card in politics creates hatred among the other tribes who may feel inferior. NPP should strategically choose National Executives which will debunk the perception that the party is Akan dominated party. They must accept the advice of Yaw Boateng Gyan in good faith because some leading NPP members such as Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe have also attributed the failure of their party to tribal issues; it is common knowledge in Ghana that when you mention NPP, then it smacks of an Akan based party, he emphasized.
