Residents of Ashaiman have appealed to the government to fast track construction works on the dual-carriage road from the Adjei Kojo underbridge through the main Ashaiman traffic light to the roundabout on the Tema-Akosombo road to bring relief to road users. It would be recalled that drivers and a section of the youth in Ashaiman, in June 2013, embarked on a violent demonstration to protest the poor conditions of roads in the municipality. The situation was revisited when most parts of the Accra-Tema area experienced a six-hour downpour in the early hours of Tuesday. As a result of the rain, the stretch of road from the Adjei Kojo underbridge end to the main Ashaiman traffic light became unmotorable and the travelling public was stranded because there was no walkway for them to go to the main Ashaiman lorry park. The rain deposited a mixture of sand and water on the road and made it difficult for vehicles to drive through; it was even more difficult for pedestrians to wade across. Last year, a contract was awarded and in September, contractors were seen tarring portions of the road, specifically the stretch from the Ashaiman timber market roundabout, through the frontage of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) to the main Ashaiman traffic light. Work has, however, been slow and the residents have called on the contractor to expedite work to save the situation. Some motorists and road users who spoke to the Daily Graphic bemoaned the slow pace of the reconstruction works and appealed to the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly to ensure the availability of funds for the speedy completion of the project. �We heaved a great sigh of relief when some time after the demonstration last year, the contractor moved to site to fix the road, but it appears our hopes have been dashed as a result of the delay. The dust generated on the road as well as the silt that is deposited any time it rains is seriously disrupting our movement. Government must act swiftly,� Abass Inusah, a driver, said. The Public Relations Officer of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Mr Kwasi Adu-Gyamfi, in an interview, said although work was ongoing, the assembly was actively monitoring the construction works to ensure that the contractor delivered quality work.
