Ultimatum: Banks Have to April 8 to upgrade ATMs

Banks in the country have up till April 8 to upgrade their ATMS from Windows XP to Windows 7 or 8 or face sanction. The Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) is therefore urging banks to do its possible best to meet the deadline. Microsoft (MSFT) will no longer issue security updates to patch holes in Windows XP from April 9, leaving those ATMs exposed to a new kind of cyber attacks. In a statement, GhIPSS noted that the Advanced ATM fleets operating systems can be updated remotely over their network whilst older ATMs must be upgraded one by one. It explained further that some ATMs might either have their components upgraded or discarded altogether if they do not have enough computing power or memory to run the newer OS, windows 7. It cautioned banks and ATM service providers that ignore the deadline that it continue to function but will become more vulnerable to attacks.
