President Mahama Denounces Dumping Of Faeces Into Sea

President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday gave the assurance that government would do everything within its purview to stop dislodging faecal matter into the sea in the coastal area. The current situation, where faecal matter is dislodged into the ocean is unacceptable and shameful and we shall rally round all the authorities engaged in sanitation to stop that practice that had existed for more than 18 years, President Mahama added. President Mahama said this when he inspected the Proposed Mudor Faecal Treatment Plant at the near Korle Lagoon in Accra. The project, which is initiated by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly with technological support from the Danish government, would absorb all the liquid and solid waste in the metropolis. The plant is currently receiving between 40 and 45 vehicle loads of faeces on daily basis where liquid is separated from the solids, which is eventually turned into compost manure for farming. Apart from tested as the most sustainable means of absorbing solid and liquid waste in Denmark for the past 30 years, it has over the years also become the major source of fertilizer that is more effective and affordable in the Scandinavian country. President Mahama said the technology would be replicated in every region and district to rid the cities and towns off the filth that had over the years engulfed those urban dwelling places. He promised to work hand-in hand with the Danish government to maximize the benefits of the project for the betterment of all Ghanaians irrespective of their geographical location. Mr Nogens Jensen, Danish Trade and Development Minister, said the technology was the best considering the fact deposited faecal matter could dry up for recycling within 24 hours and promised to offer the necessary assistance for the Ghanaian counterparts to benefit. He said the recycled waste could also be used for land reclamation apart from its use as compost fertilizer for crop production.
