Mr Robert Sabah, GPRTU Chairman for Greater Accra, has appealed to drivers to desist from increasing lorry fares as the National Working Committee of the GPRTU was yet to agree with the Ministry of Transport on the appropriate percentage increase.
He said although the National Working Committee had come with the percentage that they wanted their members to charge after its meeting yesterday, it was yet to receive approval from the Ministry of Transport.
Mr Sabah told the GNA in an interview that the GPRTU National Working Committee would meet the Minister of Transport next week to deliberate on the proposed percentage to be charged by members.
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) on Monday increased prices of petroleum products as parts of its Automatic Adjustment Formula.
Petrol went up by 7.06%, diesel by 5.25% and Liquefied Petroleum Gas by 4.74%, premix went up by a little over 4%, while kerosene went up marginally by 0.38%.
The Ministry of Transport after consultation with various transport stakeholders in January approved a 20% increase in transport fares effective January 27th.
The January increment was after a meeting between the Ministry of Transport and the GPRTU and other transport stakeholders.
The driver unions had suggested 50% increment but after negotiations with the Ministry of Transport, the fares were worked down to 20%.
