A former Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has posited that without Nana Akufo-Addo as the Presidential candidate, the party risks losing the 2016 elections. He explained that Nana Addo�s popularity among the Ghanaian electorate was unmatched by that of any other presidential hopeful in the party. Though the former Okaikoi South Constituency Member of Parliament believed the status quo of electing a flag bearer for the party should be maintained, he said Nana Akufo-Addo remained the best candidate. �I believe Nana Akufo-Addo is still the most popular person among those who are seeking to lead the party; I believe so, I speak to people on a daily basis and I have been a parliamentarian for 16 years so I have a huge constituency.� He stressed, �Because of my position as Director of communication I am in touch with party supporters across the country, who speak to me on a daily basis and I know firmly that Nana Addo is still the man to pick.� Nana Akomea�s endorsement came in the wake of controversies surrounding who should lead the NPP in 2016. Soon after the party�s national delegates� congress in Tamale, there has been media war between persons perceived to be supporters of Nana Addo and Alan Kyeremanteng. Whilst those in the Alan camp believe Nana Addo had outlived his usefulness as the NPP flag bearer, those on the other side (Nana Addo�s camp) maintained that he remained the best candidate to lead the party to victory in 2016. Waging into the debate, Nana Akomea in an interview with Citi News called on supporters of all the NPP presidential hopefuls to avoid divisive campaigns by conducting themselves in a civil manner. �It gives the impression that the party is in a full blown flag bearer contest and the timing is wrong because it is coming so soon after the successful delegates� conference and the tone of the claims and counter claims is also disturbing for the future.� Nana Akomea cautioned, �Let�s contest each other in the spirit of all of us being members of one party; we don�t need to step on our toes we need to step on the toes of the NDC.� Nana Akomea commended Nana Akufo-Addo for issuing a statement restraining his supporters from engaging in internal bickering. �I heard the statement that Nana Akufo-Addo issued and I am hoping that party people will take it serious and I will be happy if those who are in Alan Kyeremanteng�s camp or any other camp can issue a statement in the same tone as Nana Akufo-Addo did just to calm the waters.� He further challenged the newly elected NPP executives to immediately restructure the party ahead of the flag bearer contest.
