Day Old Baby Dumped in Pit [PHOTO]

Some residents of Nayiong, a suburb of Bunkpurugu in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District of the Northern Region on Easter Monday discovered a newborn baby girl in a toilet pit. The act, believed to have been committed the previous night, shocked residents who discovered that the mother had attempted to dig a hole to bury the baby. According to reports, the mother also tired to dump the poor girl in a pit behind a house under construction. Some residents in the neighbourhood claimed they heard the cry of the baby at night but thought she was with the mother. The matter has been reported to the Bunkpurugu Police, who told DAILY GUIDE that they had launched a search for the culprit. The Bunkpurugu Police believe the suspect left the town after committing the heinous crime for fear of being arrested. The body had been interred as at the time of filing this report. According to sources, a second-year student of the Bunkpurugu Senior High School (SHS) in 2013 was arrested and handed over to the police by some residents for committing a similar act. Religious and traditional leaders have condemned the latest act describing it as barbaric. They rained curses on the mother and expressed optimism that the police would apprehend and arraign her before court. Some people believe such acts may incur the wrath of God and called on the Chief Priest of the town to intercede on behalf of the people.
