Nurses, who were posted to Boahenekrom, a subsistence farming community in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern region, have fled the town, denying residents of healthcare for years, Today can report. The situation has resulted in the soaring of spread of contagious diseases in Boahehenkrom and its surrounding towns including Obodan and Otukwadwo. Speaking to the paper, the Chief of Boahenekrom, Nana Obuba, surrounded by his elders, vented his spleen on government, for refusing to post nurses to enable residents get healthcare. According to the chief, the nurses cited reasons of lack of potable water, accommodation, places of convenience, amongst others for exiting the small town. He noted that in the year 2000, residents on their own efforts were able to put up a structure to serve as a clinic where the nurses worked. �However, lack of support from the government could not enable us to furnish the building to an appreciable level to attract health workers. �the nurses who were posted here one after the other, left unceremoniously. The last nurse, three years ago, left here with the pretext of going to give birth but never returned,� Nana Obuba disclosed. The elders of the town re-affirmed their dire need for nurses and a clinic now as they indicated they can no longer wait, adding that the abandoned clinic building which has now become a death trap, serves as a meeting place for the residents. The residents decried that the situation has led to the spread of many communicable diseases with some resulting in death, stressing that the abandoned clinic could be used for immoral acts by some of the youth. �When one is suddenly taken ill, the person has to be rushed to the Nsawam or Suhum Government Hospitals, which sometimes leave patients dead before getting there to receive treatment. �The government keeps deceiving us during every election period but never attend to our plights after they get our votes. The entire social infrastructure they promised us has not been fulfilled,� they noted. They further revealed that government has taken them for a ride for far too long and would chase out every politician who set a foot on their land during campaign period, if their needs are not met urgently. Against this backdrop, they resolved to soon embark on a massive demonstration together with the neighbouring towns to drive home their request for nurses, a decent clinic and other social amenities.
