NDC Needs New Face As Chairman - Group

A group calling itself Friends of Abodakpi has lauded the decision by the former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Keta constituency, in the Volta Region, Mr Daniel Abodakpi, to contest the chairmanship of the the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when nominations are opened. The group said the NDC was in transition and needed a new face and an experienced politician whose exploits could lead the party to victory in the 2016 general election. The spokesperson of the group, Mr Evans Naublay Armoo, told the Daily Graphic in Takoradi that the groups nationwide tour revealed that Mr Abodakpi, otherwise known as Dan Abodakpi, who is the current Ambassador to Malaysia, was very much liked by the grass roots of the NDC. He said the party supporters had come to realise the hard work of Mr Abodakpi as a former national co-ordinator of the defunct Committee for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR) and a senior cadre of the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) that eventually metamorphosed into the NDC. Mr Armoo indicated that through his selfless devotion to the just cause of the party since its formative years, some of the people, especially those in the northern regions, were optimistic that Mr Abodakpi was the right person to assume the national chairmanship to reinvigorate the NDC to maintain power. The spokesperson said the people were optimistic that based on the capabilities of Mr Abodakpi, he would be able to steer the affairs of the NDC to clinch resounding victory for the party, adding that: "We need a chairman who will unite our party, ensure job opportunities for the youth and create avenues for womens empowerment." Mr Armoo said the supporters acknowledged the contributions of the aspiring candidates for the chairmanship, including the National Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Kofi Porturphy, who had also been a staunch cadre. However, he pointed out it was the desire of the party supporters that Mr Porturphy kept to his job as the NADMO co-ordinator, saying: "We think he should continue to serve in that capacity for the nation because his departure from that area will create a big vacuum." He explained further that Mr Porturphy should be encouraged to hold on to that position rather than coming to vie for the national chairmanship position, because in the estimation of the grass roots, Mr Abodakpi was the right candidate and I personally renew my call on all and sundry to give their support to Abodakpi to become the chairman of our great party in order to win the 2016 national polls.
